Iced Matcha Lemonade
Bright, citrusy, and impossibly refreshing—matcha meets fresh lemon juice over ice for a vibrant green summer drink that's sweet, tart, and earthy.
Matcha lemonade sounds unexpected, but the combination is electric. Lemon's sharp acidity lifts matcha's earthy richness, creating a drink that's both invigorating and deeply satisfying—like a green tea sour that nature designed.
The trick is making a concentrated matcha shot first, then layering it over the lemonade and ice. This creates that gorgeous two-tone effect—golden lemon on the bottom, vivid green matcha floating on top—before you stir it all together.
Use real lemons, not bottled juice. The fresh oils in lemon zest and the brightness of just-squeezed juice make an enormous difference. A touch of simple syrup balances the tartness without making it overly sweet.
This is the ultimate summer batch drink. Double or triple the recipe, keep the matcha shot and lemonade base separate in the fridge, and combine over ice when ready to serve. It stays vibrant for hours.
Ingredients
- 2 tsp matcha powder
- 3 tbsp hot water (80°C)
- 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice (about 1 lemon)
- 1 tbsp simple syrup (or honey dissolved in warm water)
- 1 cup cold water
- Ice cubes
- Lemon slices for garnish
How to make it
- 1Sift matcha into a small bowl. Add 3 tbsp hot water and whisk until completely smooth with no lumps.
- 2In a tall glass, combine fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and cold water. Stir well.
- 3Fill the glass to the top with ice cubes.
- 4Slowly pour the matcha concentrate over the back of a spoon onto the ice so it floats on top of the lemonade.
- 5Garnish with lemon slices. Admire the two-tone effect, then stir to combine and drink immediately.
