Teehaus Winterthur

A tea shop founded in 1994 by Susanne Amsler and since 2009 in the Bauhof on Steinberggasse, with over three quarters of its teas organic.

In storeShips onlineOpen since 1994
No big warehouse behind the counter: the shop orders small amounts at a time so that what reaches the shelf comes from current pickings.

Susanne Amsler opened the Teehaus in 1994 at the Holderplatz, and in 2009 growing demand moved it to a larger space at Steinberggasse 61, inside the Bauhof — a building with seven and a half centuries behind it. She still owns the shop and works the floor with a small sales team. The street is in Winterthur's Altstadt and closed to traffic: from the station you follow the Untertor to Kasinostrasse, turn towards Neumarkt, and the shop is about seventy metres into Steinberggasse.

Tea is sold mostly by the 100 g, with 50 g for a few and herbs from 30 g. The everyday end holds a Gunpowder, the cheapest thing on the list, and a tarry Lapsang Souchong; above them sit a Lung Ching Grade 1, a Keemun Mao Feng and a Yunnan Jinzhen. Japan is represented by a Kirishima matcha and a Kirishima hojicha, Taiwan and Fujian by a milky oolong, an Anxi Tie Guanyin and a GABA. There are herbs, a masala chai and green mate too.

More than seventy-five per cent of what the shop sells is organically grown: the business itself is certified CH-BIO-006 and re-inspected every year by bio-inspecta. Rather than keep a large store room it orders small quantities from its suppliers, and the finest lots are vacuum-packed. Beyond the leaf there is teaware and accessories, tea biscuits and green-tea chocolate, vouchers and the Teehaus advent calendar, plus an online shop. It closes on Mondays; if you drive, the Technikum car park is two minutes away.

What to buy here

  • Long Jing (Dragon Well)

    Lung Ching Grade 1

    from CHF 17 · 100 g

A graded Dragon Well, sold in the same 100 g step as the everyday blacks. It is the green the shop leads with, and the grade is printed on the label rather than left vague.

  • Yunnan Dianhong

    Yunnan Jinzhen

    from CHF 18 · 100 g

A golden-bud Yunnan black and the dearest of the shop's 100 g blacks, which is where a buying policy of small, current lots shows most clearly.

  • GABA Oolong

    GABA Oolong

    CHF 11 · 50 g

A GABA oolong is a style few shops bother to stock, and this one is among the handful here sold in 50 g rather than 100 — a smaller commitment for an unfamiliar cup.

The one worth the trip

Pu Er Mao Cha Yiwu

from CHF 10 · 50 g

Loose sheng mao cha from Yiwu, sold in 50 g: raw pu-erh leaf before anyone presses it into a cake. It is the one genuinely rare thing on a list that otherwise sticks to well-made classics, and because this shop refuses to hold a big warehouse, what you buy is a current lot rather than something that has sat in a depot for years.
