Reencontraté – Boutique de té
A Punta Carretas tea boutique with more than 400 references, much of it bought straight from small growers in southern China.
Tea is sold by weight from 12 g, so a first-flush Darjeeling and a Japanese matcha can both be tried on the same visit without buying either twice.
Reencontraté is a tea boutique at José Ellauri 555, on the corner of Gregorio Suárez, in Punta Carretas. It keeps more than 400 references, many of them bought directly from small producers in southern China, and it opens Monday to Friday from 11:00 to 18:00. In a city that drinks far more mate than tea, a catalogue that size is the whole point: the shop exists for people who want to choose between teas, not only between brands.
Everything is sold by weight, from 12 g, which is why a first order does not have to be a commitment. The verified list is priced in 50 g: black tea, jasmine green, chai, a pure rooibos and several herbal blends at $U 380; an oolong, a pu-erh with fruit and hibiscus and two more herbal blends at $U 420; a first-flush Darjeeling FTGFOP from the Sirubari Teesta garden at $U 450; and a Japanese matcha at $U 490, the top of the list.
Beside the tea there are teapots, cups and glasses, flasks, infusers, tea bowls, tins and gift sets, and the shop makes custom blends to order. It also runs workshops and events, announced through its Instagram account rather than a calendar on the site. One Uruguayan detail is worth noting: MateDeTé is yerba mate blended with lemongrass and matcha, sold in the same 50 g bag as the teas.

What to buy here

See our page on this tea →Matcha
Té verde Matcha original (Japón)
$U 490 · 50 g

Jasmine Organic
$U 380 · 50 g
The organic jasmine green sits in the shop's entry price tier, which makes it the easy first 50 g for someone who has only met jasmine tea in a restaurant.

The one worth the trip
Oolong Via Lactea (blend)
$U 420 · 50 g
The only oolong on the verified list, and it is listed as a blend rather than a single-origin leaf. It comes in the same 50 g bag as everything else and sits in the middle tier, a step above the black teas and below the matcha. So the family least represented in this catalogue is not the most expensive thing in it — and with 12 g the smallest unit the shop sells, trying it costs almost nothing.
