Throat Coat 'Hot Toddy' Mocktail
A non-alcoholic riff on the classic hot toddy, built on a strong Throat Coat Blend infusion with honey, lemon, and a whisper of warming spice — all the comfort, none of the alcohol.
The hot toddy has long been a folk remedy for colds and sore throats, and its core elements — hot water, honey, lemon, and warming spice — map almost perfectly onto Throat Coat Blend without needing whisky to make the case. Because this tea is naturally caffeine-free and calming, we've made the 'cocktail' slot here a mocktail by design, leaning into the blend's own soothing character rather than masking it with spirits.
Brewing the tea extra strong, the same way you would for the wellness drink, is what gives this mocktail its body — a thin, weak base would get lost under the honey and spice. Aim for the full 8–10 minute steep and don't skimp on the amount of blend.
A small piece of fresh ginger steeped alongside the tea adds a gentle warming kick that stands in nicely for the heat alcohol would normally provide, while a cinnamon stick and a few cloves bring the toddy's familiar holiday-spice aroma.
If you do want an adults-only version for an evening gathering, a small splash (15 ml) of dark rum or bourbon can be stirred in at the end — but the mocktail stands fully on its own, and is the version meant for anyone managing a scratchy throat, an early bedtime, or simply skipping the alcohol.
Ingredients
- 2 Throat Coat Blend tea bags (or 2 tbsp loose blend)
- 1 1/2 cups hot water (95–100°C)
- 1-inch piece fresh ginger, thinly sliced
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3 whole cloves
- 2 tbsp honey
- Juice of 1 lemon
- Lemon wheel and extra cinnamon stick, for garnish
How to make it
- 1Combine the tea bags or loose blend with the ginger, cinnamon stick, and cloves in a heatproof mug or small teapot. Pour the hot water over them.
- 2Cover and steep for 8–10 minutes to extract a strong, well-spiced base.
- 3Strain into a mug, discarding the solids. Let cool slightly for 1–2 minutes.
- 4Stir in the honey until dissolved, then add the fresh lemon juice.
- 5Garnish with a lemon wheel and a fresh cinnamon stick. Serve warm, sipping slowly.
