The Eerikinkatu tea room open since 2005, founded by two sisters, that sells most of its loose teas by the gram with a €5 minimum.
Pricing by the gram is the oldest way to sell tea and the fairest: €5 of Lung Ching is fifteen grams, €5 of gunpowder is seventy, and either way you decide the size.
Théhuone is at Eerikinkatu 10 in Kamppi, a tea shop with a tea room, and it describes itself as Finland's first tea room, established in 2005. It was founded by the sisters Nina and Nea, who, in the words of their own site, brought tea to Helsinki. A second shop and tea room opened at the AINOA shopping centre on Tapionaukio in Espoo, so the same range can be bought on either side of the city line. The catalogue covers black, green, oolong, white, yellow and pu-erh, plus jasmine, matcha, maté, chai, rooibos, herbal and decaf teas, and teapots and books.
Most loose teas are sold by weight: the product page shows a price per gram, a field for the number of grams and a €5 minimum per tea. That puts an organic Gunpowder at €0.07 the gram, Earl Grey Excelsior and a Yunnan Dian Hong at €0.08, Assam Borhat, a Castleton Darjeeling and an organic black chai at €0.10, a superior jasmine at €0.12, an Ali Shan Jin Xuan at €0.17 and a first-grade 2026 Lung Ching at €0.32. Japanese and Taiwanese teas come as fixed packs instead: Sencha Fuji at €16 the 100 g, Shui Xian at €17 and Dong Ding Premium at €21 the 50 g, and the house's organic ceremonial matcha at €27 the 30 g tin.
The Helsinki room opens 10am to 7pm on weekdays and 10am to 5pm on Saturday. Online orders are delivered within Finland only, by Posti parcel at €5.70 or home delivery at €17, and pickup at either room is free; loose tea cannot be returned once weighed. For a first visit, the sensible order is €5 of two or three blacks by the gram, which is how the shop has always expected people to shop, and a pot in the tea room while they are weighed.

The one worth the trip
Organic Ceremonial Théhuone Matcha

The house's own organic ceremonial matcha, in a 30 g tin at €27. Matcha is the one tea the by-the-gram counter cannot sell loose, and it is also the one where a tea room earns its keep: a bowl whisked properly in the room tells you in a minute whether the tin is worth taking home, which no product page can. Twenty years of pouring it at Eerikinkatu is the reason to ask for it here first.
