Taiwanese oolong from Te Guan Yin to GABA, Japanese greens up to a gyokuro, and a tea tasting at the table before any of it goes in the bag.

Nigiro Tea House is at 38 6th Street in Parkhurst, Johannesburg, open every day from nine to six, and it is the third kiosk of a company based in Plumstead, Cape Town, that has imported and served tea since 1999; the other two are the Plumstead tea café and a kiosk at Spice Route in Paarl. The house lists some 500 teas across more than 700 flavours, with a tea menu and food at the table, tea tastings, a monthly tea meetup, an online tea club, wedding blends and corporate gifts.

Everything is sold in 100 g packs with the size in the product name. The black shelf runs from Earl Grey Classic at R220 and a Ceylon Pettiagalla at R230 to English Breakfast at R240, Irish Breakfast at R280, an Assam Bukhial at R290, a Darjeeling first flush at R315 and a Lapsang Souzhong at R410, with a masala chai at R255. The greens are Japanese: Genmaicha at R270, Sencha Fukujyu and a Jasmine Blossom at R350, and a Gyokuro Classic at R1,100, the highest price on the Johannesburg page.

The oolong shelf is Taiwanese and climbs in roast and rarity: Te Guan Yin at R510, Dong Ding at R540, a Milky Jin Shuan at R550, Oriental Beauty at R685 and a GABA oolong at R855. Single herbs are sold the same way, chamomile flowers at R245 and peppermint leaves at R285 the 100 g. The tea menu at the table pours the same list, which makes the tasting the sensible first step before carrying a 100 g pack home.

The one worth the trip

GABA Taiwanese Oolong Tea 100g

R 855 · 100 g

A GABA oolong, the Taiwanese tea oxidised in a nitrogen atmosphere, which gives it a dark, fruity cup unlike any other oolong on the shelf, in a 100 g pack at the top of the oolong range. Few shops on the continent list one at all; ask for a cup at the table before you commit to the pack.
