Nuremberg's family-run tea shop since 1985, in the old town near the Rathenauplatz U-Bahn, with more than 400 teas sold from 50 g and an online shop since 2009.
Four hundred teas and a 50 g minimum is a shop built for curiosity: for the price of a coffee you leave with a Keemun, an Earl Grey or a green mate, and a free sample of something else.
Evas Teeplantage has been selling tea in Nuremberg since 1985 and calls itself, with some justice, the city's tea institution. The shop is at Innere Laufer Gasse 24 in the St. Sebald quarter of the old town, with its entrance on Judengasse, five minutes on foot from the Rathenauplatz U-Bahn on lines U2 and U3; the bus 36 stop at Laufer Tor is around the corner. It is family-run, opens six days a week with shorter hours on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, and has sold online since 2009.
The range runs past 400 teas, organised the German way: black teas by origin (Darjeeling, Assam, Ceylon, China, Nepal), greens from Japan, China and Korea, jasmine, matcha, oolong, white and yellow teas, then herbs, mate, chai, rooibos and fruit blends. Loose tea is sold in 50, 100, 250, 500, 750 and 1,000 g, and the 50 g prices are modest: English Breakfast, Earl Grey and Keemun at 2,59 €, a Gunpowder at 2,31 €, a Darjeeling second flush from Margaret's Hope at 3,80 €, and green mate at 1,49 €.
The more serious leaf is where the shop shows its range: Ti Kuan Yin at 7,98 € the 50 g, Oriental Beauty at 9,30 €, Alishan at 11,83 €, a Long Jing at 12,21 €, a Yunnan Dian Hong called Golden Rain at 10,23 € and a Silver Needle at 9,85 €. Every order includes free samples, there are tasting packs for the undecided, tea seminars in the shop, and an organic certification on the blends that carry it.
