Cultivate Tea & Spice Co.
A St. Augustine tea and spice company that began at the Saturday farmers market and now runs a shop and café in a parish hall on State Road 16A.
Most of the teas here start at seven or eight dollars a pouch, which turns the shelf into a tasting flight: an Assam, a Golden Monkey and a Wuyi oolong cost less together than the one tin of matcha on the same shelf.
Cultivate Tea & Spice Co. belongs to Jon and Amber, who began by drying herbs from their own backyard garden for the family. They launched the business in 2013 and spent their first seasons with a booth at the St. Augustine Amphitheater Farmers Market every Saturday. Their teas and spice blends are also stocked by local shops in St. Augustine and Jacksonville, among them Diane's Natural Market, Alms + Fare and Juniper Market.
The shop and café are in the Parish Hall of Trinity Parish North Campus, at 6350 FL-16A, open Sunday to Friday from 8am to 3pm. The café menu is built on the house loose teas, with coffee from the local 3rd Wave Coffee Roasters, organic smoothies, and breakfast and lunch served at any hour. The same room sells the full range of teas and spices, plus products from other St. Augustine makers.
Most loose teas come in a small pouch of half an ounce to an ounce, at US$ 7 or US$ 8, with an 8 oz bulk bag for the ones that become a habit. The range covers Earl Grey, Malty Assam and Golden Monkey, a Japanese sencha, Iron Goddess and Wuyi oolongs, Bai Mudan, Masala Chai and a pu-erh tuocha, alongside the native yaupon teas and the spice blends that share the shelf. The Uji matcha is the exception, sold by the tin.
