Salzillo tea and coffee

Eleven origins in 125 g bags from a counter inside the Mercado Central, including a yellow tea and loose yerba mate — both rare on a Spanish shelf.

A market counter that stocks yellow tea is telling you something: this is a list built by someone who orders what exists, not what sells.

Salzillo is a Murcian tea and coffee house, and its Alicante counter sits inside the Mercado Central on Avenida Alfonso X El Sabio, in the building where the city does its food shopping. That location sets the rhythm: it opens at eight and closes at half past two, three on Fridays and Saturdays, and not at all on Sundays. You buy tea here on the way past the fishmonger, not on an afternoon outing.

The list is organised the way a Spanish tea merchant organises one: orígenes puros, blends tradicionales, biológicos, desteinados, aromatizados, and then separate sections for infusiones, rooibos and mate. Almost everything is sold in a single 125 g bag rather than a ladder of sizes, which makes the prices unusually easy to compare — 6,53 € buys English Breakfast, English Afternoon or Lapsang Souchong, and 5,81 € buys the Gunpowder.

Two items on the list are the reason we would send somebody here rather than to a chain. One is a yellow tea, a family that most shops in Spain never order from their suppliers at all. The other is loose yerba mate, which sits in its own section and is close to unheard of on a tea counter in Alicante. Around them the list still covers the expected ground — Darjeeling in two grades, a Pu Erh, a Snow Bud white, a dark oolong and an organic Chun Mee.

What to buy here

  • Yellow tea

    Té Amarillo

    € 8.70 · 125 g

A yellow tea on a market counter in Alicante. It is the rarest of the six tea families and the one most Spanish shops skip entirely; the 125 g bag is more than anybody needs, which is the only drawback.

  • Mate

    Mate verde

    € 3.64 · 125 g

Loose green yerba, in its own section, at the lowest price on the whole list. If you have a gourd and you live in Alicante, this is the shortest walk to a refill.

  • Pai Mu Tan

    Té Pai-mu-tan (té blanco)

    € 6.94 · 60 g

The one tea the counter sells in a smaller 60 g bag instead of the house 125 g, which makes it the easiest white on the list to try without committing to a quarter of a kilo.

The one worth the trip

Té Oolong Fancy Dragón Negro

€ 23.17 · 125 g

A dark Formosa-style oolong, the most expensive thing on the counter and the only oolong in Alicante sold as a named grade rather than a flavoured blend. A 125 g bag of it is a serious commitment at this price, so treat the trip as the tasting: go on a weekday morning when the market is working, ask what came in, and decide at the counter. Nothing else in the city gives you that conversation.
