Thirty years of the same idea: a wall of canisters, a jar to smell before you buy, and an everyday shelf where most 50 g bags cost CA$ 8.50.

Acquired Taste Tea Company was established in 1996 and now trades from 10122 124 Street NW, on Edmonton's 124 Street, open Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 6pm, Saturday from 9:30am to 5:30pm and Sunday from noon to 5pm. The shop is built around rows of classic steel canisters and hundreds of tea samples kept in small glass jars, so you can smell a tea before deciding on it. Next to the loose leaf it stocks packaged brands such as Taylor's of Harrogate, Barry's, Yorkshire, Bewley's and Steven Smith, plus teaware from Polish pottery to Japanese teapots.

The catalogue runs to about 240 products, with 74 black teas, 32 greens, 7 oolongs and a long run of herbal and rooibos blends, sold in 50, 100, 200 and 400 g bags, or 25 g upwards for the premium teas. The everyday shelf sits at CA$ 8.50 the 50 g: English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Assam Bukhial, Lapsang Souchong, Japanese Sencha, Jasmine, Genmaicha, Gunpowder, Moroccan Mint, Formosa Oolong and Rooibos. Above it come Darjeeling Mim Estate at CA$ 9.50, Imperial Keemun at CA$ 10, Milk Oolong at CA$ 12 and Golden Monkey at CA$ 17, with Dragonwell and chamomile at CA$ 5.95 and CA$ 4.95 the 25 g.

A 50 g bag makes around 20 to 25 cups, by the shop's own reckoning, and a Tea of the Month Club sends a new selection by post. Orders ship anywhere in North America; within Canada the rate is flat from CA$ 35 and free from CA$ 125. It is the older of Edmonton's two independent tea shops and the one with the deeper shelf of classic blacks, from Ceylon and Assam estates to Keemun and a 2016 shou pu-erh, while the house on 95A Street leans towards Chinese greens and oolongs.
