Everything here carries a number instead of a shelf label: N.83 for the Yunnan silver needles, N.305 for the cheapest Ceylon in the room, N.401 for the Uji gyokuro at the top of the list.
ETTE Tea Company works out of a third-floor unit at 333 Kreta Ayer Road, on a quiet stretch of Chinatown away from the busier lanes. The company was established in 2014 by Victor Koh, who calls himself a first-generation tea maker because he does not come from a family of tea merchants; the first product was a pandan chiffon blend made in a home kitchen. The name plays on the suffix –ette, the one that makes things smaller.
The catalogue is numbered rather than grouped by shelf, and the numbers do part of the sorting: the N.80s and N.90s hold the Chinese classics — Keemun Panda, Long Jing, Tie Guan Yin, Da Hong Pao, Bai Mudan, Lapsang Souchong — the N.200s the tisanes, the N.300s the estate blacks from Assam, Darjeeling and Ceylon, and the N.400s the Japanese leaf. Packets run from 18 g to 50 g. The Kenilworth OP Ceylon is the cheapest thing on the list and the Uji gyokuro the dearest.
The hours are short and specific: afternoons from 2.30pm Monday to Wednesday and on Friday, one o'clock to half past five on Saturday, closed Thursday, Sunday and public holidays. The online shop carries the same catalogue and ships. Away from the counter the company blends to order for cafés and restaurants in Singapore, Brunei and the Maldives, runs tea workshops, and sells personalised caddies, gift boxes and subscriptions from the same site.

The one worth the trip
N.401 Uji Gyokuro (loose leaf)

N.401 is the most expensive tea on the list and the only gyokuro among the seventeen we checked here: 25 g of shaded Uji leaf, filed in the N.400 block beside the hojicha and the matcha powder. If you are climbing three floors in Chinatown for a single packet, this is the one the numbering system was built to end on.
