Chado started in 1990 as a small tea room near the corner of La Cienega and 3rd. Thirty-six years later it runs four rooms across greater Los Angeles: the Downtown salon at 369 East 1st Street, inside the Japanese American National Museum in Little Tokyo, plus Hollywood Boulevard, North Raymond in Pasadena and El Prado in Torrance. The Downtown room is the one to start with, because the museum block makes it an easy stop on a day already spent walking.
The list runs past 150 teas and blends, and the leaf is sold by the 4 oz across every family. English Breakfast and Assam TGFOP sit at the bottom of the ladder at US$ 9.88; Lung Ching Dragon Well is US$ 16.38, the house Reena's Masala Chai US$ 14, peppermint US$ 14.38, yerba mate US$ 14.88, organic rooibos US$ 19.88 and the Champagne Tieguanyin US$ 37.50. Matcha breaks the pattern: it comes in a 30 g tin at US$ 45.
The rooms are built for afternoon tea, with tiered trays and reservations, and they take private events. Beyond the loose leaf there are pyramid teabags of the house blends, accessories, gift cards and a subscription, and everything ships from the online shop. The Downtown salon opens Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00 and closes on Mondays, so a Monday visit to Little Tokyo needs another plan.

The one worth the trip
Champagne Tieguanyin

This is the most expensive tea sold by the 4 oz on the list, more than three times the entry-tier blacks, and the only Tieguanyin the shop stocks. A rolled Chinese oolong at that level rewards several short infusions from one measure, which is exactly what a tea room lets you try before buying. Order a pot of it at the table first and the 4 oz decision makes itself.
