Kaffehuset
A tea and coffee shop that has traded in central Stavanger for over 50 years, now at Østervåg 15, with loose tea in 100 g bags at plain prices.
One of the last specialist shops left in the centre of Stavanger, where a hundred grams of Gunpowder still costs 62 kroner.
Kaffehuset describes itself as one of the few unique shops left in the city, and the description fits: it has sold coffee and tea in Stavanger for more than fifty years and now sits at Østervåg 15, near Klubbgata in the centre. The shop sells fresh coffee beans by the bag, coffee equipment, Dunoon bone china mugs and a wall of loose tea; the web shop carries the same tea and coffee, while the Dunoon range is larger in the shop than online, and the owner answers the phone and the email for anything the site does not show.
The tea is sold in 100 g bags, and the plain teas are the reason to come. Black: Ceylon Breakfast and Ceylon OP, English Breakfast, an Assam Koilamari TGFOP, two Darjeelings (Chamong second flush and Tiger Hill), Keemun, Lapsang Souchong and a China Golden from Yunnan. Green: Gunpowder, Chun Mee, Sjasmin, a Japanese Sencha and Genmaicha, and a Monkey from Fujian in 70 g. Oolong: Milky and Formosa, both from Taiwan, and a Chai Dragon oolong with ginger and chili. White: Pai Mu Tan and a jasmine-scented Tai Mu Long in 50 g; then a Pu Erh, a plain rooibos, chamomile and peppermint, and the Japanese Hotaru matcha in 30 g and 100 g.
Around the plain teas sit the flavoured blends that fill the rest of the shelf: black teas with orange, vanilla or Nordic berries, green teas with apple and cinnamon or mango, rooibos with caramel or strawberry cream, fruit infusions, and a Stavangerblanding of Darjeeling and Ceylon with a house flavouring. Prices stay low across the board: most black teas sit between 65 and 95 kr per 100 g, the Japanese Sencha at 199 kr is the exception, and the Debio-certified organic teas are marked as such. Blooming tea flowers for the glass teapot round out the list.

Darjeeling Chamong (second flush)

The one worth the trip
China Golden (Yunnan black)
kr 137 · 100 g
China Golden, a plain black tea from Yunnan with the golden tips of the region and a mild cup of malt, walnut and toffee, sold in the 100 g bag. It is the tea we would send a friend to Østervåg for: Yunnan blacks are rare in Norwegian shops, this one is unflavoured and inexpensive, and the owner will tell you which Dunoon mug to drink it from.
