Biotea House
A tea sommelier's own brand with kiosks in Multiplaza and Altaplaza and a shop in Casco Antiguo, selling more than a hundred loose teas by the 50 g.
The most useful tea counter in Panama is a kiosk in a shopping mall, and that is a compliment: it is where the city actually walks past, and the shelf behind it is serious.
Biotea House is the brand of Yasibit Chejlyk, who certified as a tea sommelier and tea blender at El Club del Té in Spain in 2016 and selects every tea on the shelf. The main point of sale is a kiosk at Plaza de la Luna in Centro Comercial Multiplaza, by the orange parking entrance, open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 8pm and Sunday from 11am to 7pm; a shop on Calle 1a Oeste in Casco Antiguo opens every day from 10am to 7pm, and the newest kiosk, K0-05 on the ground floor of Altaplaza Mall, runs until 8pm on weekdays and 9pm on Friday and Saturday.
The teas come from China, India, Sri Lanka, Japan, Kenya and Taiwan and are sold loose by 50, 100, 200 and 300 g, with some herbs from 20 g, matcha in 30 g tins and 50 g bags, and pyramid bags of 15. The 50 g shelf is where the range shows: Sri Lanka Kenilworth OP at US$ 8, Assam Borengajuli, Earl Grey, a Kakagawa sencha, a Yamasaki genmaicha and Green Morocco at US$ 8.50, Ti Kuan Yin and Se Chung oolongs at US$ 10, Darjeeling Happy Valley at US$ 11.50, Formosa Oolong at US$ 12, Silver Moonlight white at US$ 17, Gyokuro and Quanzhou Milk Oolong at US$ 20 and jasmine pearls at US$ 27.
Online orders can be picked up free at the Multiplaza kiosk or shipped across the country, dispatched within 24 to 48 hours on weekdays and the same day for Saturday orders placed before noon; shipping is free from US$ 60 outside a few outlying zones. The brand blends to order, runs tastings, tea afternoons and workshops, sets up tea stations for events and packs corporate gifts, and its blends are made at its own workshop in 24 de Diciembre, east of the city. For a first visit, the Multiplaza kiosk is the one with the longest hours and the full shelf.
