McQuarries Tea & Coffee Merchants
Saskatoon's family-run tea and coffee merchant on Broadway Avenue, serving the city for over 90 years with loose tea by the 50 g bag.
Over ninety years in Saskatoon and the price list still starts at a 50-gram bag, which is how a tea merchant stays a tea merchant.
McQuarries Tea & Coffee Merchants is a family-owned shop at 708 Broadway Avenue, in the Nutana district across the river from downtown, and it says it has served Saskatoon for over 90 years. The shop opens Monday to Saturday from nine to half past five and sells three things: tea, coffee and the giftware that goes with them, teapots and cups included, plus a wall of Torani syrups. Inside the city it delivers Monday to Friday for a small fee, and the web shop takes orders for the whole range.
The tea list is organised the old way, by region and blend. Regional blacks cover a Ceylon Lumbini, a Darjeeling Happy Valley, a Lapsang Souchong and three organic estate teas, an Assam Tonganagaon FTGFOP1, a Nilgiri and a Ceylon Blackwood; the breakfast blends are English, Irish and Scottish, with Yorkshire Harrogate and an Earl Grey in several versions. Greens run from Sencha, Genmaicha and Pinhead Gunpowder to a Dragon Well and a Jasmine with Flowers; oolongs from Formosa to Iron Goddess of Mercy; whites from Pai Mu Tan to Silver Moonlight and an organic White Downy. Rooibos, chai, yerba maté and fruit and herb blends fill the rest.
Every loose tea is sold in the same five sizes, 50, 100, 150 and 250 g bags and a one-pound bag, and the everyday teas also come in a 500 g vacuum-sealed package, so the per-gram price drops as the bag grows: a Sencha is 6.75 CA$ for 50 g and 56.65 CA$ for the pound. Out-of-stock teas stay on the list with a note rather than disappearing, which makes the catalogue a fair record of what the shop usually carries, and the Broadway counter is where to ask when a garden tea will be back.

Assam
Assam Tonganagaon Organic FTGFOP1
from CA$ 8.25 · 50 g
An organic single-estate Assam, Tonganagaon FTGFOP1, with the malty depth of the region and the whole-leaf grade that keeps it smooth; the breakfast tea for anyone who takes milk, in a 50 g bag to try before the pound.

Darjeeling Happy Valley
from CA$ 9 · 50 g
Darjeeling from Happy Valley, one of the oldest gardens above the town of Darjeeling itself, and one of three single-garden Darjeelings on this list next to Tukdah and Margaret's Hope; lighter and brighter than the Assam, for the afternoon.

Iron Goddess of Mercy – Oolong
from CA$ 7.75 · 50 g
Iron Goddess of Mercy, the Tie Guan Yin oolong of Fujian, in a 50 g bag: the one tea on the oolong shelf that is not flavoured, rolled tight and floral, and the easiest introduction to the category this side of the prairies.

The one worth the trip
Nilgiri – Organic Black Tea
from CA$ 7.75 · 50 g
An organic Nilgiri, the black tea of the Blue Mountains of southern India, which almost no Canadian shop stocks as a plain estate tea: brisk and fragrant, closer to a Ceylon than to an Assam, and good hot or iced. It is the tea we would send a friend to Broadway Avenue for, because the breakfast blends can be found elsewhere and this cannot.
