The sample ounce is the whole idea here: four dollars buys enough of a Margaret's Hope Darjeeling to know whether you want the bag, and the tea room upstairs lets you taste it poured first.

The London Tea Room sits at 255 Union Blvd in DeBaliviere Place, a few blocks from Forest Park, and runs Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm with Monday and Tuesday off. The room serves afternoon tea in three sizes, a full Afternoon Tea, a High Tea and a Wee Tea, and its gift shop, open whenever the tea room is, stocks the house's fifty-plus loose-leaf teas with accessories and gifts. There are fourteen parking spaces of its own, a free lot behind the building and an accessible entrance at the back.

The blends sell online through a sister web shop, London Tea Merchant, in three sizes: a sample of 1 oz, or half an ounce for the lighter leaves, then 4 oz and 16 oz bags. The sample ounce starts at US$ 3.95 for Irish Breakfast and Cream Earl Grey and reaches US$ 5.45 for the London Tea Room Blend, an Assam from Khongea Estate, Earl Grey, a Ceylon from Nilmini Estate and an Imperial Golden Yunnan, with Keemun and a Darjeeling from Margaret's Hope at US$ 4.45 and Lapsang Souchong at US$ 5.95. Orders leave by USPS or UPS within one to two business days.

What sets the list apart in St. Louis is the Taiwanese shelf: three spring 2026 lots sold only by the ounce, a GABA oolong called Amber Drift from Sanxing in Yilan at US$ 15, a roasted Velvet Moon from Qilai at the same price and a Li Shan high-mountain oolong at US$ 18, next to an everyday Iron Goddess of Mercy at US$ 7.95. The rest of the wall is the classic English tea-room spread: Jasmine Green and Jade Cloud, a White Peony, a Masala Chai built on the Khongea Assam, a caffeine-free rooibos chai, peppermint, chamomile and a Blood Orange Pu'er on a shu base.

The one worth the trip

GABA Oolong Amber Drift AD-101 (Spring 2026)

US$ 15 · 1 oz

A GABA oolong from Sanxing in Yilan, Taiwan, from the spring 2026 harvest and sold only by the ounce: a Jinxuan leaf processed without oxygen, which gives it the dried-fruit depth the style is known for. Few tea rooms in the Midwest stock a lot like this at all, let alone three Taiwanese spring teas in a row, and it is the one to cross the city for before the harvest sells out.
