The Random Tea Room

A Northern Liberties tea room with a garden out back and a wall of teas it blends and names itself, sold in 6 oz bags.

Open four days a week, Thursday to Sunday. The shelf runs from an eighteen-dollar bag of chamomile to a spring-flush Darjeeling, and the breakfast blend is named after the street outside.

The Random Tea Room sits at 713 N 4th St in Northern Liberties, with a garden out back. Rebecca Goldschmidt started it in 2008 with no prior background in tea: a BFA in sculpture and years spent in art galleries, scenic shops and antique sales. She learned the leaf during the renovation of the room itself. Since then it has been two things at once — a room where tea is served, and a shop where the same leaves are weighed into bags to take home. It opens four days a week, Thursday to Sunday.

Everything on the shelf comes in the same 6 oz bag, which makes the range easy to read at a glance. Single herbs — chamomile, peppermint, lavender, lemon balm — are US$ 18 and mark the floor of the list; a spring-flush Darjeeling at US$ 40.50 is the ceiling. In between sit Kenilworth Ceylon and Genmaicha at US$ 21, a hojicha at US$ 25.50, Sencha and Earl Grey Royale at US$ 27, Lapsang Souchong and a Golden Pu-Erh at US$ 30, Keemun Mao Feng at US$ 33 and a roasted Argentinian maté at US$ 19.50.

Several teas carry names the room invented: 4th Street Breakfast, after the address, and Bodhidharma's Eyelids for the white tea. Loose leaf and herbs are sold alongside the menu poured in the room, orders can be placed online, and the tea is packed in compostable paper bags with a stated aim of zero waste. The room also hosts events, sells wholesale, and ships, so a bag tried in Philadelphia can be reordered from anywhere.

  • English Breakfast

    4th Street Breakfast

  • Hojicha

    Kaiseiki Hojicha

    US$ 25.50 · 6 oz

The only roasted green on the wall: hojicha is fired until the leaf turns brown, which puts it on the toasted side of the shelf rather than next to the Sencha.

The one worth the trip

Bodhidharma's Eyelids

US$ 37.50 · 6 oz

The only white tea on the list, and the clearest example of how this room works: a tea it named itself, after the old story in which Bodhidharma's eyelids fall to the ground and grow into tea plants. It sits near the top of the shelf, just under the spring-flush Darjeeling, and comes in the same 6 oz bag as the chamomile.
