La Tetería

The most complete counter in Santiago: 11 of the 12 tea types in our catalogue, Chilean herbs included.

In storeShips onlineOpen since 2007
Eleven of the twelve tea types that exist fit on this counter. The missing one is mate, and in Chile that is a supermarket purchase.

La Tetería is the only shop in Santiago that treats yellow tea as a category rather than a curiosity. On the shelf there is a Huoshan Huang Da Cha from Anhui and a dark heicha from Anhua, two families most Latin American shops never even order from their suppliers. Next to them sits a drawer of Chilean boldo and cedrón, sold loose by weight.

The house opened in 2007 and today has two shops: the Providencia one, a block from Los Leones metro station, and a second inside Mall Espacio M downtown. The catalogue travels from China to Japan to India to Taiwan and back — a Keemun Luxus Congou, a Taiwanese Dong Ding, a Gyokuro Asahi, raw and ripe pu-erh, and a ceremonial matcha from Kagoshima.

Almost everything is sold in 50 g, which makes it cheaper to explore than any comparable shop in the city. The exception is the Mi Lan Xiang, sold in 10 g, and that is the honest way to try a Fenghuangshan dan cong before committing to half a jar.

The one worth the trip

Yellow Sun – Té amarillo de Anhui (Huoshan Huang Da Cha)

CLP $ 9,800 · 50 g

Yellow tea takes an extra slow-fermentation step almost nobody bothers with, which is why it is so hard to find. If you have never had one, this is the reason to cross the city instead of ordering online.
