Thirty years in the same market and one rule on every label: the price is per 100 g, so a Keemun and an English Breakfast can be compared with a glance.
Teastore began in 1996 as a small specialty tea shop in downtown Ottawa and is still at 53 York Street, in the historic ByWard Market, open Monday to Sunday from 10am to 8pm. The catalogue runs to around 370 products across loose leaf, sachets and blooming teas, with bold blacks, delicate greens, oolongs, whites and herbal infusions, plus infusers, strainers and storage tins. You can sit and drink tea in the shop, there is a small selection of in-house baked goods, and a patio opens from May until the autumn.
Every loose tea is priced per 100 g, and several 100 g of the same tea go into one bulk bag unless you ask for separate bags at checkout. The everyday shelf sits at CA$ 15 and 16: Earl Grey, English, Irish and Scottish Breakfast, Lady Grey, Keemun Panda, Nepal Ilam and Kenya Kambaa estate teas, organic Assam, Ceylon and Darjeeling, Sencha Fuji, Gunpowder, Genmaicha, Bancha, Moroccan Mint, chai, chamomile, peppermint, rooibos and green yerba mate. Above it: Ti Kuan Yin at CA$ 20, Pai Mu Tan at CA$ 24, Dragonwell, Golden Monkey and Milk Oolong at CA$ 30, Gyokuro Asahi at CA$ 34, Wuyi Rock Oolong at CA$ 42, and Silver Needle and Jasmine Dragon Pearls at CA$ 45. The organic Japanese matcha is the exception, sold in a 113 g sealed bag at CA$ 40.
Online orders ship within Canada only, free over CA$ 100, and shipping to the United States is paused; local pickup in Ottawa is offered at checkout. It is the one tea shop in the city where you can walk in any day of the week, which matters in Ottawa: the single-origin specialist across town is working from a new address with curbside pickup, and the rest of the loose leaf in the city is sold through coffee roasters.
