Sydney's loose-leaf chain since 1993: four shops around the city and a twenty-three-tea list sold almost entirely in the same 50 g bag.
Twenty-three teas, twenty-two of them in the same 50 g bag — four different chais and a yerba mate among them, on a shelf inside a Pitt Street arcade.
The Tea Centre was founded in 1993 as a single Sydney store and, by the company's own account, was an early specialist in loose leaf in Australia. That first store is still trading: Shop 4 in Stockland Piccadilly, at 210 Pitt Street in the CBD, open since 1993. Three decades on the chain runs locations across Queensland, New South Wales and the ACT, with its head office and warehouse in Brisbane, and it is still Australian owned and operated.
The shelf is unusually flat: twenty-three teas and twenty-two of them in the same 50 g bag, from an English Breakfast at A$ 9.45 to Silver Needles at A$ 31.45. In between sit the familiar black and green names, a Dung Ti and a Ti Kuan Yin, a pai mu tan, hibiscus and peppermint, two rooibos, a yerba mate, a pu-erh, and four separate chais — masala, green, rooibos and a decaffeinated Mumbai blend. Only the matcha breaks format, in a 30 g tin.
The Sydney shops are not interchangeable. Piccadilly opens at eight in the morning for the office crowd and is the oldest in the group; Bondi Junction, opened in 2025 inside Westfield, added a blending bar where you build your own mix and a matcha-to-go station; Hornsby has been trading in its Westfield since 2006; and Warringah Mall in Brookvale covers the northern beaches. Silver Needles Yin Zhen is the most expensive loose leaf on this list, more than three times the English Breakfast, and it is a bud-only white — the one item on a shelf of everyday blends that asks you to slow down. Because the chain sells it in the same 50 g bag as the rest, the ask stays small: you are not buying a tin, you are buying a fortnight.
