Sencha Tea Bar
An Uptown tea bar open since 2002, where more than forty loose teas are all sold as a one-ounce portion before you commit to a tin.
Forty-one teas on one counter, and all but five of them cost under seven dollars a bag. This is a shelf built to be tried, not collected.
Sencha Tea Bar opened in Uptown in 2002 under a different name: it was Tea Garden then, and by the shop's own account one of the first places in the Twin Cities to pour bubble tea. The rename came in 2015, when loose leaf moved to the front of the business. The counter is at 2601 Hennepin Ave S, and it still works as a bar as much as a shop — bubble tea, tea lattes and freshly brewed leaf are made in front of you.
The list we verified runs to forty-one teas, and almost every one of them is sold as a one-ounce portion, which is the whole idea: a tea costs about what a sandwich costs. The blacks — Assam, Keemun, Irish Breakfast, Kenya Black, Lapsang, Darjeeling, Earl Grey — sit between $3.99 and $5.99. The greens climb from pinhead gunpowder to gyokuro. There is one white, one pu-erh, one yerba mate, and a wall of botanicals sold by the two ounces: hibiscus, lemongrass, rose petals, licorice root, elderberries.
Among the tea-plant leaf only two items break the one-ounce rule, and both come in two: the ceremonial matcha and the Ali Shan oolong, which is the most expensive thing on the list. Beyond Uptown there are tea bars in Saint Paul, Woodbury and Madison, Wisconsin, and the same loose leaf ships nationwide, free over $49. Since 2024 the company has been part of Amplified Experiences, a Twin Cities beverage group formed when Sencha merged with Five Watt Coffee.

What to buy here
Kenyan Black
Kenya Black
from US$ 3.99 · 1 oz
The only African black among the seven on this counter, and it sits in the cheapest tier — an ounce is enough to see how it differs from the Assam next to it.
See our page on this tea →Gyokuro
Gyokuro
from US$ 12.99 · 1 oz
The top of the green list and one of the few teas here that leaves the $3–6 band, yet it is still sold in the same one-ounce portion as everything else: shaded Japanese leaf without a tin-sized commitment.
See our page on this tea →Tieguanyin
Iron Goddess of Mercy
from US$ 4.99 · 1 oz
Tie Guan Yin under its English name, and one of the two cheapest of the four oolongs here — the one to take if you want to find out whether rolled oolong is your family.

The one worth the trip
Ali Shan
from US$ 27.99 · 2 oz
At $27.99 it is the most expensive item among forty-one, and one of only two teas that does not come in the house's one-ounce size. Ali Shan is a Taiwanese high-mountain oolong, and buying it means giving up the thing that makes this shop easy — the cheap sample — in exchange for two ounces of the one tea the counter clearly treats differently from the rest.
